MODERATE ACTIVITIES

Main Info

Its modern face is dazzling, but China is no one-trick pony. The world’s oldest continuous civilization isn’t all smoked glass and brushed aluminum and while you won’t be tripping over artifacts – three decades of round-the-clock development and rash town planning have taken their toll – rich seams of antiquity await. Serve it all up according to taste: collapsing sections of the Great Wall, temple-topped mountains, villages that time forgot, languorous water towns, sublime Buddhist grottoes, and ancient desert forts. Pack a well-made pair of traveling shoes and remember the words of Laotzu: “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

DAY 2 | Beijing

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel.

Discover Beijing’s rich heritage as we step back in time to an era when mystery and incredible power reigned. We start at Tiananmen Square and get an overview of China’s communist history on a tour of the vast array of halls and monuments. This is the symbolic heart of China and it can accommodate one million people. Next, we visit the Imperial Ancestral Temple, within the Imperial City. The day continues with an in-depth exploration of the Forbidden City, the power base of Chinese emperors for centuries.  Visit the Imperial Palace Museum which details the history of each dynasty, represented in four palatial halls with antiques and treasures from the Ming to the Qing dynasties. This was the ceremonial and political center of government for almost 500 years.

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the Summer Palace, with the possibility to enjoy an optional (at your own expense) 30-minute boat ride on the Empress Cixi Waterway.  Lunch is at a local restaurant.

DAY 3 | Beijing

After breakfast, you will head off to the world-famous Great Wall at Mutianyu (cable car is not included), a colossal architectural work designed for defensive purposes and communication over 6,000 kilometers. The Great Wall, one of the most remarkable feat of mankind, whose segments were built as long ago as 500 B.C. Archaeologists estimate that the wall once ran 6200 miles; today it is still impressive at 3,750 miles.  Serious work began in 220 B.C, when China’s first emperor Qin Shihuang, conscripted millions of soldiers and peasants to participate in this dangerous undertaking.  Constructions continued over the centuries, with the most impressive portions built during the 14th century Ming Dynasty.

You will have 3 hours to wander around Mutianyu Great Wall. It is very exciting to take the cable car up and down (at your own cost).

Mutianyu section is a bit more rugged and slightly less crowded than the more famous Badaling. Moreover, 96% of Mutianyu is covered with greenery, more than any other section of the Great Wall. This section of the Great Wall holds a prominent place in Chinese military history and now, it is equipped with cable car.

Enjoy a local lunch at a restaurant near by Great Wall. In the late afternoon, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

DAY 4 | Beijing - Xi'an

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel.

Soak up more of Beijing’s iconic attractions, ahead of catching a high-speed train to Xi’an. Today, you will head to the Temple of Heaven which was founded in the 15th century. This features a complex of fine buildings set in gardens, surrounded by pine woods. The layout and the individual buildings symbolize the relationship between heaven and earth – the god’s world and the human world – and the special role played by emperors within this association. The temple provides a unique opportunity to see the capital’s past and present exist in cohesion side-by-side. Explore the finer points of tea under guided instruction at a dedicated facility.

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the train station and embark on a five-hour-plus train journey from Beijing to Xi’an. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Lunch is at a local restaurant.

DAY 5 | Xi'an

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel.

We will depart to head to Banpo Neolithic Village for an hour and continue onto Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum. The Terracotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century, where work is ongoing at the site. UNESCO listed it in 1987 as one of the world cultural heritages. The State Council authorized to build a museum on site in 1975. Altogether over 7,000 pottery soldiers, horses, chariots, and even weapons have been unearthed from the site.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, we will make a short stop at the Terracotta Replication Factory on the way back to the hotel.

DAY 6 | Xi'an - Shanghai

Have breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Shanghai. Shanghai is a multicultural metropolis with both modern and traditional Chinese features in the city. Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will be transferred to your hotel for overnight. The rest of the day is open at leisure for you to do as you please.

DAY 7 | Shanghai

Following breakfast, you will be picked up and head to Shanghai Old Street for sightseeing.

You will also visit the Yu Garden. Yuyuan Garden is the only fully restored classical Chinese garden in Shanghai. It was inaugurated in the Ming dynasty and has a total area of 20,000 square meters.

Although the garden occupies less than five acres, demonstrates perfectly the sophisticated art of combining several different elements to create a world in miniature – ingeniously mingling pavilions and corridors, small hills and carefully selected and well-placed rocks, lotus ponds, bridges, winding paths, and trees and shrubs.

A short stop will be made at the Yu Garden Typical Shanghai Tea House. You will also have the opportunity to stroll along Bund. Bund is still evocative of Shanghai’s past where, during the city’s riotous heyday, these buildings housed the great foreign enterprises. Your guide will point out the most prominent buildings of old Shanghai’s commercial heart including the former British and Russian Consulates, the former Jardine Matheson Company, the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, and the Shanghai Club.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. We continue the tour at the Shanghai Museum, a large museum of ancient Chinese art with a collection of over 120,000 items of cultural relics displayed on a floor space of 12,000 sq. The museum-style and presentation surround visitors with artifacts demonstrating ancient wisdom and philosophy. The exterior design of the round dome and the square base symbolizes the ancient idea of a round heaven and a square land.

We will also visit Tianzigang. The tour’s final stop will be the Old French Concession for sightseeing. Afterward, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
