While it is our intention to adhere to the route described, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable, to make alterations. On Day 1 of the tour, you will be advised of any amendments.
Upon arrival at the airport, our host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel.
Begin your morning with breakfast at your hotel before departure for your flight to Puerto Maldonado (not included, to be booked by agent). Upon arrival, you will meet one of our representatives that will transfer you to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens, we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days and leave the rest at our safe deposit. We request you do this to help keep the boats and cargo light. Puerto Maldonado to Tambopata River Port: Skirting Puerto Maldonado, you will ride for 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port to enter the Native Community of Inferno. You will be served a boxed lunch. Tambopata River Port to Posada Amazons: The forty-five-minute boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Posada Amazonas will take us into the Community´s Primary Forest Private Reserve. Orientation: Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and discuss you with important navigation and security tips. A twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase runs through the middle providing safe access to the platforms above. From atop, you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then, toucans, parrots, or macaws are seen flying against the horizon or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. You will have dinner and perhaps you may want to go an ecotourism lecture. The lecture is a daily presentation of the Inferno ecotourism project is available every night from staff members.
Begin your third day of this trip with breakfast. The rest of the day is full of the following tours: Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake: Tres Chimbadas is thirty minutes by boat and forty-five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there, you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin, and horned screamers. Otters are most active from dawn to 8-9 A.M. Parrot Clay Lick: The clay lick is only a twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From hiding place located about twenty meters away, you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Birds such as mealy and yellow-headed Amazon, blue-headed parrot, and dusky-headed parakeets descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings and mid-afternoon. Afterwards, you will have lunch. Ethno-Botanical Tour: A twenty-minute boat drive downriver leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape. The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. You will have dinner at this point of the end. Optional night-walk: You will have the option of hiking out at night when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Easiest to find are frogs with shapes and sounds just as bizarre as their natural origin.
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the area and staff of Corto Maltes Amazonia. Your guide will accompany you on your way back to the city. You will stop by our office once again to recollect the baggage that you left behind. You will then visit the local market to see agricultural products of the region, especially fruits of the Amazon. Afterwards, our personnel will accompany you to the airport hoping that your stay was as pleasant for you as it was for us to show you this beautiful corner of Peru. You will now take your flight from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco (not included, to be booked by agent). Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel. At 7:45 P.M., there is a dinner show for you to attend.
Have breakfast at your hotel. Take the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, you will take an Imperial Cusco city tour that will start at the Main Square to visit the cathedral and its valuable and beautiful colonial masterpieces such as The Cross which arrived along with the first conquistadores. Your tour continues to visit the Korikancha Temple, Inti God shrine, on which the Santo Domingo Church was built. According to the chronicles, this temple was completely covered in gold in Inca times. Following the temple, you will visit the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park to explore Q’enqo, the Puma shrine, and see the sacrificial altar embedded inside a rock cave. You will be able to see Tambomachay and its sacred fountains of life. You will also be able to experience Puca Pucará’s viewpoint and watchtower, which guarded the city entrance, and Sacsayhuaman, an impressive fortress of colossal dimensions with rocks that are up to 4 meters tall and surrounded by beautiful views blending together perfectly.
Breakfast at your hotel before an early departure to Machu Picchu. Services included: Transfer from hotel to railway station, round-trip train ticket of Cusco/ Aguas Calientes/ Cusco, and briefing for the next day tour to the Machu Picchu Ruins. The rest of the day will be a visit to Machu Picchu. The pre-Columbian Inca site located 8,000 feet above sea level on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley, which is 50 miles northwest of Cusco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas“, Machu Picchu is one of the most familiar symbols of the Inca Empire. You will be served a box lunch during your visit.
After breakfast, do as you please with your free time. You may rest or take another visit to the Ruins. At the arranged time, return via train to Cusco, you will be transferred from the train station via bus to the hotel.
Following breakfast, you will depart your hotel for a tour bus to Puno. On the way, you’ll stop to visit the attractions this beautiful route has to offer. The first stop is Andahuaylillas for a visit to its beautiful chapel. Afterwards, you will visit Racchi, the temple of the Wiracocha god where the walls and narrow streets stand out. You will have a buffet lunch at the temple and have the opportunity to see the view at La Raya, the natural border between Cusco and Puno. Before the final destination, you will visit Pucara Museum and have a chance to get one of the local classic bull-shaped ceramics. At the end of the afternoon, you will have arrived in Puno for overnight.
Begin your ninth day with breakfast at your hotel before beginning a full day. You will visit the Uros Indian and Taquile Island at Lake Titicaca. The full-day excursion will take you to the highest navigable lake in the world and visit the floating islands of the Uros Indians. The Indians considered themselves “Lords of the Lake”, they were convinced they had black blood because they did not feel the coldness of the lake and the winter. The tour continues onto Taquile where a native community of about 400 families still lives with the traditions of the 14th century that respect the principals of an Incan way life. Taquile is a very important site on Lake Titikaka for its archeological remains, the sacred and ceremonial sites, the festive activities, their rituals, and for the daily life of the inhabitants which is dedicated to farming, textile production, and fishing.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your departure to Lima (not included, to be booked by agent). From Lima, take your connecting flight home.
