Upon arrival at the airport, our host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Cusco (not included, to be booked by agent). Upon arrival in Cusco, there will be a welcoming reception and then you will be transferred to hotel. In the afternoon, your exclusive city tour starts with a visit to the San Cristobal Plaza to enjoy its panoramic view of the city. You will visit the San Pedro Market to soak in its local flavors and to learn about more of the products grown in the area which supply the whole city. Afterwards, you will visit the Korikancha temple or “Gold Enclosure”, which surely will dazzle you with its gold covered walls. The tour continues with a visit to the Santo Domingo Church. You will walk from San Blas, the artisans’ neighborhood, to the HatunRumiyoc Street. You will stop at the Inca Roca Palace, nowadays, home to the Archbishop’s Palace and the famous Twelve Angle Stone. You will continue the tour by walking to the Main Square to visit the cathedral and its and beautiful colonial masterpieces.
Have breakfast at your hotel before a full day excursion to the Pisac Indian Market and the Ollantaytambo Fortress. Be ready for a drive through the fertile countryside to the colonial village of Pisac. During your visit to the bustling marketplace, you will have the opportunity to bargain with the natives for many different types of Peruvian handicrafts and jewelry. After lunch, the tour continues to the village of Ollantaytambo for a visit to its impressive Incan fortress. In the afternoon, you will return to Cusco.
Begin your fourth day with breakfast at your hotel. Today, you will go on a full day excursion to Machu Picchu. Early in the morning, you will depart for a train ride through the sacred valley of Urubamba to the “Lost City of the Incas,“ Machu Picchu. Perched 8,200 feet above the valley, it was hidden by mountains and semi-tropical jungles for 400 years until discovered by Hiram Bingham of Yale University in 1911. Archaeologists believe that the Inca “Virgins of the Sun“, women who vowed chastity, took refuge from the Spanish Conquistadors here. You will be provided a lunch box on this day. You will surely enjoy one of the most incredible sights on earth, the sanctuary of Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, you will return to Cusco.
Have breakfast at your hotel before having a free day in Cusco for independent activities. You may want to wander the lovely city, by exploring the astonishing narrow streets of this tile roof colonial town, a truly remarkable experience. Great buys are the traditional Peruvian handicrafts, alpaca-wool sweaters, and rugs, ponchos, pottery, gold and silver jewelry, leather goods, just to name a few. Since there so much variety, we strongly advise that when you like any particular item, you should buy it, you may not find the same item in another store.
Have breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado (flight not included, to be booked by agent). Upon arrival from Cusco, our representative will welcome you to the airport and drive you ten minutes to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens, we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days. The rest of your items will be left at our safe deposit to help keep the boats and cargo light. At the headquarters, you will be transferred into Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. To continue the day, you will be transferred via boat to Posada Amazonas from the port. The forty-five-minute boat ride will take you into the community´s Primary Forest Private Reserve. Once you arrive, there will be a reception by the guides. Our guides are biologists, tourism professionals, or community members. Unless noted otherwise, our guides speak English. Guides are assigned at a 10:1 ratio in Posada Amazonas. Groups smaller than 10 people will be merged with other groups under one guide. If you would like a private guide or a guide in a language other than English, please let us know. Be prepared for orientation, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. The rest of the day, you will participate in the following activities: Canopy Tower: A twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop, you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then, toucans, parrots, or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. Ecotourism Lecture: A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.
After breakfast, you will visit Tres Chimbadas Lake. The lake is thirty minutes by boat and forty-five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there, you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin, and horned screamers. Otters are most active from dawn to 8-9 A.M. Parrot Clay Lick: The clay lick is only a twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a hiding spot located about twenty meters away, you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Birds such as mealy and yellow-headed amazons, blue-headed parrots, and dusky-headed parakeets descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoon.
At this point of the day, you will have lunch. Ethno- Botanical Tour: A twenty-minute boat drive downriver leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape. The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. After the ethnobotanical tour, you will have dinner. Optional night walk: You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Easiest to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural origin.
After breakfast, you will be transferred from Tambopata River Port to the Puerto Maldonado headquarters. From the Puerto Maldonado Headquarters, you will be transferred to the airport (flight not included, to be booked by agent). Depending on airline schedules, you may be required a dawn departure on your connecting international flight.
